I Don't Really Need This

I was going to post a photograph of the people mentioned in this then I thought I've seen enough of their faces already.

Are we electing a couple or a man (as is the case in this general election)?

It is of no interest to me whatsoever what the wives of these men do or don't do. In fact it's disappointing Nick Clegg's wife felt she had to 'keep up' with the labour and tory women, because I was thinking, just yesterday, how sensible the libdems were keeping out of the 'totty' battle. I was wrong.

Should Scottish politicians ever go down the road of waving their wives in my face then, no matter how much I may like their policies, I will not vote for them. I find the whole PR wives stunt nauseating.

Anyone remember Ruby Wax? An opinionated, loud American who was a TV chat show host some years ago. She's now advising the government.Goodnight Vienna has an excellent post about this. As she says it's just a small niggle in the greater scheme of the mess facing Britain but the cost could well keep quite a few pensioners in comfort for the rest of their lives.

No10 Petition: Stop Puppy drowning Climate Change ad.

Over the past week the Advertising Standards Authority has received 375 complaints about the campaign.

There is also No10 Petition (657 signatures and rising) to get this Government propaganda pulled:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to Stop wasting taxpayers' money on climate change propaganda designed to frighten our children.

The government's latest TV advertisement on climate change is pure propaganda designed to frighten our children. Showing kids a puppy drowning in the centre of what looks like a British town is beyond fiction. It shows a weakness of argument for a government to have to resort to fear to bring the public "in line". This advertisement should be pulled immediately.

In the current economic climate, surely the government can find something better to spend six million pounds of taxpayers' money on.

Only 36% of Americans Believe man is causing climate change.

WASHINGTON — The number of Americans who believe there is solid evidence the Earth is warming because of pollution is at its lowest point in three years, according to a survey released Thursday.

The poll of 1,500 adults by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found that only 57 percent believe there is strong scientific evidence the Earth has gotten hotter over the past few decades, and as a result, people are viewing the situation as less serious. That's down from 77 percent in 2006, and 71 percent in April 2008.

But while the evidence appears clear, only about a third, or 36 percent of the poll respondents feel that human activities – such as pollution from power plants, factories and automobiles – are behind a temperature increase. That's the first decline since 2006.

The NHS is broken. It needs serious attention, or even scrapping. At the moment everyone loses out, as my own story demonstrates.

I have told my tale on my own blog, but to summarize, some years ago I was forced to pay for private medical care even though I was on low pay, as I could not afford to take time off work. The care cost less than £500, but I could not really afford it (my credit was good, luckily for me).

However a far more general point can be drawn from this if we consider the idea that I might not have had that credit, had I been forced to take nine weeks extra off work.

Obviously my loss and gain account would be somewhat balanced. I would have been able to work a little, and might have been able to claim some benefits. I would have had far more spare time, which might have been valuable. However during that time I would have been in pain, and would have had no money, so the enjoyment of my enforced holiday would have been limited.

The companies I was working for would of course have lost out. One would probably have had to pay me some sick pay, although I am not sure I was entitled. In any case the company would have had the management problem and expense of covering my workload. I was also very difficult to replace directly, so the clients would have suffered significantly worse service, and potentially lost time and additional expense (they could ill afford). The other role I had would probably not have been covered, and some of the work cancelled. New employees were hard to find at that time.

Ironically the government would have lost out more than I would, far more than the cost of my private treatment. As stated I think I would have been entitled to benefits. I would not have been paying tax on money I was not earning. My second role put a lot of money into the Treasury, the government earned more than I did for that work, and much of it would have been cancelled. They would then have had to pay for my NHS care.

So I would have lost out; my employers and clients, and their clients, would have lost out; the government would have lost out. Lose - lose - lose. I worked all this out yesterday while debating the NHS on another blog. It must happen in many more cases than my own, and is the clearest sign I have seen that the NHS is not fit for purpose, and the NHS is a drain on our economy far greater than its bloated cost.

What is the purpose of government spending?

Paul Waugh has a post that will interest many here in his Evening Standard blog. I have little to add to the substance of his post, except my thought that politicians and journalists should grow up.

However a comment in James Forsyth’s post on the matter in the Coffee House struck me as a place where the the libertarian right should be trying to change the terms of the debate. In discussing health and education budget cuts through efficiency savings he said “…no major politician is prepared to risk the inevitable charge of wanting to shut down hospitals, sack nurses etc”.

The health service’s purpose is not to employ nurses and run hospitals. The health service’s purpose is to treat and care for patients. To do so it employs nurses and doctors, it runs hospitals. Likewise the education department is there to teach children, for which purpose it employs teachers and runs schools.

The left has managed to change the world around. Trades unions representing public-sector workers complain about redundancies regardless of the effect on services and efficiency. The RMT is currently assuming that the London Underground is run on behalf of Transport for London for the benefit of the RMT members. It is not, it is for the benefit of the travelling public.

This is at the core of left-wing state inefficiency. Unfortunately we have had 12 years of a government that is left wing (despite all denials). The government has forced this onto private enterprise, with private companies being run for the benefit of employees above the owners and customers. The way smoking was banned even in private clubs, explicitly to avoid smoke in the workplace, showed the sense of workers’ entitlement felt by the left.

Can we start to take back the terms of debate? Talk about patients and children not nurses and teachers? To answer my original question, surely the purpose of government spending is to run services for the public, not to create employment.

Update: teachers appear to be unsackable. That is because education is being run for their benefit, not that of pupils.

Gordon Brown is taking a stroll around the grounds of Chequers to take his mind off his current woes, when he spots a man cupping his hand to scoop water from the lake.
