Amazing, isn't it? With the news that the Czech Constitutional Court will not strike down the Lisbon Treaty, the future of Europe now comes down to just one man. Only Vaclav Klaus stands in the way of full ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, and even he has previously indicated he would not stand in it's way should the Czech judges find in favour of allowing the Lisbon Treaty to stand.
So what are we to do? With Cameron set to announce he will not give the British people a referendum on a post-ratified treaty, we really are staring into the abyss. As a Conservative party member, I really have to say how disappointed I am with this announcement from my party's hierarchy, but not really surprised. As anyone who has researched the Lisbon Treaty will tell you, the effect of a no result in a referendum after the Lisbon Treaty has come into force would be a legal minefield that would consume the best part of at least the first term of an incoming Conservative government, and that is in nobody's interest.
The European question must be addressed, but I don't think it should be the main priority of any incoming Conservative administration. I know many of my fellow resistance members will not agree with me on this, and I imagine a fair few of you will be foaming at the mouth reading this. But I really don't see what more can be gained from continuing to pretend a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty will result in anything other than the Conservatives ending up as a one-term government, allowing Labour back in at the first attempt.
No, it's time to move on. Our priority now should be healing the seeping wounds Labour have left in our economy and our society. Europe must be addressed, but I see no reason for the Conservatives to pursue this any further at this time. Europe tore our party apart once before, allowing Labour to fill the vacuum and inflict 12 years of hurt on our country as a result. It's time for the Eurosceptics (and I count myself amongst them) to realise that allowing the Lisbon Treaty to dominate the agenda will only result in one thing at the next election - another five years of Labour. Now is that what you want? UKIP if you want to, I'm still voting blue.
UPDATE - Cameron has responded thus;

I´m afraid I don´t agree. How can you heal anything when the power to do so is no longer within your grasp?
3 November 2009 at 09:47If the incoming Tory Government have to legislate by EU rules, they are not in a position to do anything.
Infact, we probably don´t need them at all!
It's actually fairly straight forward. I'm not going to vote Tory because of this. This is something that people care about and Cameron and the Tory leadership need to remember this. If labour get back in, it's this decision that will have done it for them more than any other.
3 November 2009 at 10:11It was Labour's refusal to hold the referendum that got us into this position QM, not the Conservatives. It's their failure, not the Conservatives and basically you're falling into the trap. It's positively Machiavellian. Ask yourself this, if the Conservatives are part of the problem, why then do the socialist elements of Europe continue to attack them so openly as seen by the outrageous comments recently from David Miliband? No, what you'll be doing by not voting Tory is basically handing victory to Labour and then we really are finished. As long as the Conservatives still have members of the party like Daniel Hannan, Douglas Carswell and Mark Reckless, we still have a chance.
3 November 2009 at 10:18The point is that Cameron told a bare-faced lie.
3 November 2009 at 11:00I don't want another Bliar in power, so that's that.
Beside which, Sue gets to the heart of the matter. Whichever party wins the next election will be little more than a pretend government.
If you doubt that, just look at this morning's news. Who ordered the banks to be reorganised? An EU commissioner, that's who - not (as the conniving MSM try to suggest) the British government.
Until we address that issue, nothing else is much more than tinkering with the toy steering wheel, while daddy does the driving.
UKIP it is.
Since we can't have a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, we should have a referendum on whether to remain a part of the European Union.
3 November 2009 at 12:09If the Conservatives are not going to offer one of the two things, I'm not going to vote for them.
Brian, follower of Deornoth.
So what you're all saying is we should have the trial after the execution? You're all blindly playing into the hands of the Euro-federalists and I really am surprised at that.
3 November 2009 at 12:22As you'd expect, Elvis, I can't agree. Cameron is using the same tactics employed by parties since the Treaty of Rome.
3 November 2009 at 16:03Cameron expects us to back the Tories for fear of letting Labour back in, and believes that this will allow him leeway to go soft on the EU, as more and more of our powers slip away.
For me, it's line-in-the-sand time. Thus far and no further.
This is a fight for our sovereignty and civil liberties.
Cameron will have precious little negotiating leeway and those powers won back will come at a heavy cost.
No. It's now or never. I'm voting UKIP. If that means that the Tories have a tiny majority, then Cameron will have brought this state of affairs on himself.
He might even find he has to co-opt UKIP to get bills passed; it's not ouside the realms of possibility that UKIP gains 20% of the vote.
The problem is, why would you trust a proven liar?
3 November 2009 at 16:30It's compounded by the fact that, however hateful ZaNuLabour has been since 1997, it was the Conservative party that lied and betrayed us to Europe and then, time and again, sold us further down the river.
Not a very compelling record, is it?
As far as I'm concerned, the Tories have blown their last chance.
Seems the new europe has a national get out clause, how does that work ?
3 November 2009 at 23:24We can see the new europe working now, British banks being broken up ( probably for the good ) because europe says so, northern rock being split with EUs ' permission'.
As others, Cameron and the Conservatives have lost my vote as they follow traitor Heath with their lies and deception. btw, the one time I was asked about Europe I voted Yes.
