Sovereign Debt Implosion

All the front pages of the papers this morning are examining Brown's unintended revelation that if anyone's bigoted, it's him.  Mandelson, Harman, Johnson and other Labour spinners have been out in force making excuses for his comments in a damage-limitation exercise which is going nowhere.  I've only one more thing to add: people are quoting other 'off-mic' moments such as John Major's "eurosceptic bastards" or Bush's "yo Blair".  The fact is that none of the instances cited can be compared to Brown's - of all those mentioned he is the only one who insults an ordinary, decent voter and reveals his contempt for the British public.

Tonight is the third and last of the Leaders' Debates and will concentrate on the economy - supposedly Brown's strength where his intelligence and fiscal competence will shine.  I doubt it.  In the last forty-eight hours Greece has been downgraded to junk status, Portugal to A- and Spain to AA.  Investors are now fleeing Italy so can Ireland be far behind?  Britain can't be shielded from events in the eurozone and I'm only surprised that carpet-baggers have held off from attacking Sterling for so long.  British banks have £25bn exposure to  Greece and Portugal but £75bn to Spain so while Germany drags its heels and its MPs whine that Greece should be kicked out of the eurozone, nothing is actually being done and the problem spreads.

President of the European Council, van Rompuy, had this to say about the crisis:
“The sun is  rising
sleeping yet in Europe
still the same sun.” 

So  we can all rest easy in our beds and not worry that the EU has also demanded we raise our contribution to their budget by another £450m.  In perverse double-speak EU Budget Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski said:

the huge spending increase is needed to allow Brussels to help aid the economic recovery.

The social and financial consequences of international socialism and wealth redestribution has never been so exposed for what it is: as an unworkable and wicked ideology.

The near-bankrupt Labour Party is turning to a Hollywood director in an effort to brainwash  staunch the flow of voters to the LibDems and the Others.  Stephen Hopkins, director of Kiefer Sutherland's 24, is behind Wednesday evening's election broadcast.

"It [the ad] is a piece of drama, slightly sinister, fairytale-ish ... [it] peers into an imaginary future, assessing the impact of Tory policy pledges. It features actors playing three families and envisions the impact of Tory plans around child trust funds and child tax credits."

Sounds like gripping viewing.  I wonder what Hopkins would make of an election broadcast based on present-day truths rather than the fevered imaginings of a desperate, dying Party: our tanked economy; our sham parliamentary democracy; the pillage of the public purse by 300+ MPs; the warmongering and subsequent betrayal of our Armed Forces vis-a-vis procurement policies; the diktat by Think Tanks and quangos; 24-hr surveillance; the criminalising of the law-abiding majority; the politicisation of the Police Force;  the posturing on the world stage; the chaos in the classrooms; the failing infrastructure; the 3,600 new offences created since 1997; the censorship of free speech;  bans, bans and more bans  ...  On and on and on.  I know which scenario has me clutching a cushion and hiding behind the sofa.

... is coming soon to a voting booth or street near you if Brown's speech to the Progressive Governance Conference is anything to go by.  We are finished.  They came in by stealth, took advantage of our phlegmatic nature ("mustn't grumble") and robbed us blind.  The clip comes, funnily enough, from the BBC:



They're so sure of themselves it frightens me - they don't listen; they treat us like tax-fodder and worse than a parent would treat a child.  They fuck with our laws, they fuck with our sovereignty, they fuck with our heads.  Brown says he wants to look back on today from a hundred years hence and read about his place in history - I'd quite like that too.

This video is the epitome of the past thirteen years and the more I hear it, the more encouraged I am that Brown's version of history won't prevail:

The Times today carries an extensive analysis of a poll in the key marginal seats by Populus which puts Labour and the Tories neck and neck at 38 per cent. It is confirmation of a spate of recent articles that shows underlying the headlines the Tories have not sealed the deal with the electorate. It also excludes the 50 most marginal seats which are assumed to go Tory. But we know that the Unite membership in those 50 seats far exceeds the majority being defended. If it is game on in the 100 quoted, it must be battle joined in the 50 they have excluded.

This is all the more reason why we need to build on the momentum from last week's record number of calls made to Unite members in the key seats. There's another "Talk Thursday" this week and regional phone banks have been organised across the UK for this Saturday. Please get involved and make those "Two calls a day to keep the Tories away".

MSM Gagged - Again

Not for the first time the government is trying to suppress information - the excuse this time is that it wouldn't be appropriate for comment on the Afghan war to be made public in the run-up to the GE.  I wonder why!  The information itself came in the form of a leaked memo.  Nick Gurr, the MoD’s director of media and communication, is the author of the memo: “Purdah - Key Principles for    Defence Communicators.”    

British journalists and TV crews are to be banned from the Afghan front  line once a date for the election has been set, while senior officers will be prohibited from making public speeches and talking to reporters.

MoD websites will also be “cleansed” of any “non-factual” material  including    anything containing troops’ opinions of the war, according to a memo leaked to the Daily Telegraph.

It looks as though the blogosphere will have to step into the breach, again.

How David Cameron has the bare-faced cheek to say he wants to restore trust in politics and localise democracy yet in the same breath say the Conservatives will have all-women shortlists is really trying my patience with the Party.

This morning during the Speaker's Conference (which, btw, Brown appears to have bottled in its original format),  he described under-representation of women and ethnic minorities as “a real problem - a real problem for parliament and for my party”.  His answer is for CCHQ to choose 'suitable' candidates to put before voters, possibly in open primaries.  Suddenly, we're back in black, one-legged lesbian territory again.  Cameron can't pay lip service to people power by adopting the Fabians favourite tactic of smiling to your face but then stabbing you in the back.
