What Has Europe... etc?

Surprise, surprise, there's some disquiet within the EU at the moment; I don't know how these muppets ever thought such a project would work.  For muppets read delusional and traitorous b@st@rds.

Poland isn't happy; the Czech Republic isn't happy; neither is Hungary nor Slovakia.  And those are just the governments.  Germany is squabbling with France over Sarkozy's proposal to create a designated EU humanitarian relief fund (The European Union Natural Disaster Rapid Relief Fund - EUNDRRF.  Is anyone managing to keep track of all these abbreviations?)

I think the only government not making waves at the moment is our own - perhaps Cameron, like Blair, sees himself as a future President.  Let's see what he does with the EU's proposal to raise the British contribution to their budget to £10.3bn by 2013.

EU Foreign Minister, Cathy Ashton, is to speak on behalf of the EU at the UN.  Apparently Cameron won a 'concession' here - she'll only be allowed to speak in the General Council and not the Security Council.  It always goes the same way - give a centimetre and they take a kilometre.

Speaking of kilometres, road pricing across Europe, "for the sake of the environment", seems to be on the cards but that shouldn't come as a surprise given the number of surveillance cameras already lining our roads.

I think I've already mentioned Italy's proposal to extend expulsion (aka deportation) to EU nationals as well as the Roma in France but it's worth repeating if only to draw attention to the way politicians play with words.

Scotland and Norway aren't too happy either.  They're threatening Iceland with legal action over mackerel fishing rights.

It pays to riot in the EU says Evans-Pritchard and I think he has a point. Ireland, which abided by the rules, is paying more for its borrowings than Greece, which did not.

Thanks to Open Europe for this link.  Five activists from the group Désobéissance Civile Belgique occupied a crane in the centre of Brussels to protest against the Lisbon Treaty, which they said "rejects the European member states and has been ratified without consulting the citizens". They attached a banner to the crane criticising the "antidemocratic movement" of the EU. They also argued that no referendum has been held on the euro and that EU President Herman Van Rompuy was elected without elections.  Good for them - that's five more up a crane in Brussels than there are in Great Britain.

Open Europe also reports that the EU wants to set up a database to fight "radicalisation", noting that it should target not just terrorists, but also the far left, the far right, and anti-globalisation activists

My eye and Betty Martin  "EU citizens favour stronger European economic governance. 75% of  Europeans are in favour of giving the EU a stronger role in the co-ordination of member states' economic and budgetary policies."

The German Constitutional Court has strengthened the ECJ and Lisbon Treaty.   "EU decisions may only be checked if European institutions seriously overstep their powers" .  I wonder what 'Common Purpose' is in German?

This looks promising:  86m euros and 750 'citizens'  could "launch a devastating cyber attack on the EU."     It's time to raid the piggy-bank, folks.

Enough With The Nudging Already!

MINDSPACE. That's a snappy little title for a report on influencing behaviour through public policy isn't it?

"Messenger: we are heavily influenced by who communicates information

Commitments: we seek to be consistent with our public promises, and reciprocate acts
Ego: we act in ways that make us feel better about ourselves"

When they say 'we', of course they don't mean themselves, they mean 'citizens, actors, stake-holders, the public': they mean 'they'.

Look at the man-boy in this explanatory video; he's one of the authors of the report. I can't comment on what he's saying, because the audio has now packed up, but I'm sure it's all very worthy and for the good of the cause.

I've had enough of these wet-behind-the-ears policy wonks being given taxpayers' money so they can devise more and better ways of making us conform to the government's ideal, monochrome, biddable citizen. And this is just one small report amongst hundreds; there are thousands of man-boys like Hallswood working throughout the EU and the UN - this one is just a tiny, tiny cog. So, what does that make us, the people they seek to control? Ants, that's what it makes us. Irrelevant, wrapped up in our little bubbles with plenty of soma to keep us busy; working hard to pay our bills, slightly niggled and discontented without the energy or time to question why.

I've had enough of being shaped and nudged. I've had enough of being told how to behave, what to do, where to go, what to eat, what to drink, what to think, what to say. If you ever think that getting an ID card is a good idea, ask yourself why. If you ever think that the world government's* stance on global warming is right, ask yourself why. If you ever think that you're not getting the representation in Parliament you voted for, ask yourself why. Question and challenge - every time.
*Yes, it's here already in all but name; it's just that we can't see the wood for the trees.

Not for the first time the government is trying to suppress information - the excuse this time is that it wouldn't be appropriate for comment on the Afghan war to be made public in the run-up to the GE.  I wonder why!  The information itself came in the form of a leaked memo.  Nick Gurr, the MoD’s director of media and communication, is the author of the memo: “Purdah - Key Principles for    Defence Communicators.”    

British journalists and TV crews are to be banned from the Afghan front  line once a date for the election has been set, while senior officers will be prohibited from making public speeches and talking to reporters.

MoD websites will also be “cleansed” of any “non-factual” material  including    anything containing troops’ opinions of the war, according to a memo leaked to the Daily Telegraph.

It looks as though the blogosphere will have to step into the breach, again.

One of the 'facts' about which we are assured by those wise rulers who seek to censor our freedom of speech about the darkest aspects of Islam as it is actually practised in much of the world is this: if we should so much as point out that, for example: Islamist Muslims really are taught to despise the rest of humanity; or to indicate that Koran, Sira, and Hadith contain numerous examples of hostile and downright lethal injunctions to Muslims to wage undending warfare on the rest of Mankind with the intent to subjugate us; or that the present violent acts of Islamist Muslims are motivated by those parts of Islam about which we are not to discuss, then brutal, bloody, and unreasoning vengeance will generally break out as mobs of unbelievers; inflamed by our mentioning these truths, seek to punish any and all Muslims, irrespective of their beliefs, morality, motives or general law-abiding behaviour.

Geert Wilders was excluded from Britain in case his discussion of Islamism in the Netherlands should lead to outbreaks of Islamophobic vigilantism in the UK.

Mark Steyn was taken to the kangaroo court of the Ontario Human Rights Commission for articles critical of some aspects of Islam and was witch-hunted and found guilty in advance, whilst being the first ever defendant not to be formally condemned by that insane body and was variously defended by others and maligned by its officials thus: "There was no hearing, no evidence presented and no opportunity to offer a defence — just a pronouncement of wrongdoing." The OHRC defended its right to comment by stating, "Like racial profiling and other types of discrimination, ascribing the behaviour of individuals to a group damages everyone in that group. We have always spoken out on such issues. Maclean’s and its writers are free to express their opinions. The OHRC is mandated to express what it sees as unfair and harmful comment or conduct that may lead to discrimination."

Today's demonstration by the English branch of Stop The Islamification of Europe has attracted similar 'fears' of knuckle-dragging racists as 'anti-fascist' UAF and Islamists misrepresent its members as being. Last time, the anti-Islamification protest was called off by the organizers for fear of harm to the police, but the violence went on anyway, which only left one source of rioting and bigotry.

Now, despite all those dire warnings of massive and vicious persecution of innocent Muslims by individuals inflamed by the very mention of Islam's scriptural cruelties and historical and present oppressiveness, what hasn't happened is wide scale or even small-scale mosque burnings; hangings; or beatings of Muslims in the West (except perhaps by their enraged male relatives) as a result of this talk. Nor as a result of the gloating pronouncements of Islamists about our foreign policy. Nor for harrassment against Western troops. Nor for calling for the murders of Britain's colourful artistic temperament community. Nor for attempted terrorism. Nor for successful terrorism.

There have been some beatings, it seems; but we may never know what motivated that attack, but not the holocaust we're always promised every time someone quotes the murky passages of the Koran or from Islamists' own words and deeds or publish pictures or writing about Islam and Muslims.

Hey guys, are we Islamophobic hatemongers not trying hard enough or what?

You know what?

This is all so insulting. Insulting to the Muslims who find scriptural reasons to question the violent and brutal aspects of Islam and oppose its practices. Insulting to the Muslims who ignore the dark stuff and peacefully get on with their lives regardless of it. Insulting to the rest of us who are quite capable of discriminating between the killer crazies and the Muslims who work in our hospitals and colleges and supermarkets and schools and restaurants and shops and who just want to take whatever comfort and salvation they can from their faith.

The 'Don't mention the Jihad' argument has more holes in it than a, well, you know.

And if talking about it is bad enough, what bloodthirsty massacres will follow the Swiss'vote refusing to allow any more minarets to be built in their country.

Let's just wait here for the claret to rain down over the Alps at the hands of us killer infidels, yeah?
